Petrified Wood Tile by Impact Imports

Petrified wood tile can be used for floors, countertops and more!

Impact Imports is pleased to announce that, after a search that began in January 2004, we now have petrified wood tile available on a very limited basis! Petrified wood tile is available in 6"x6" (15cm x 15cm), 12"x12" (30cm x 30cm) and 6" x random length (15cm x random length) in very limited quantities. All tile is 13/16" (2cm) thick. Petrified wood tile is very difficult to make, but the end result is absolutely fabulous! You can install petrified wood tile as floor tile, a backsplash or a countertop surface anywhere you would normally install a stone / tile surface.

Petrified wood tile is cut to size in the same way you would cut limestone or another semi-porous surfacing material. The tile is set in place using thinset or mortar, sealed with a stone impregnator, grouted at the joints and then sealed (again) and color enhanced just like any other natural stone. But, the end result is a dramatic surface like no other because no other material has as much visual character.

From Wikipedia - PETRIFIED WOOD (from the Greek root "petro" meaning "rock" or "stone", literally "wood turned into stone") is a type of fossil: it consists of fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (most often a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals in the plant's cells and as the plant's lignin and cellulose decay away, a stone mould forms in its place. Petrified wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail, down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings and the various tissues are often observed features. Petrified wood has a Mohs hardness of 7, the same as quartz.
